It's not "yet another forum"

Concrete Questions is NOT a forum where endless -and often fruitless- debates take place. The questions and answers found here are specific and to the point, and are ranked by the community based on their precision and usefulness. You may still give your opinion in order to provide more information on a topic, but not to engage in an argument just to see who's right.

Questions, answers and comments that aren't useful or don't follow the behavior code get downvoted or deleted, and they do not appear in the search results. This preserves the relevance and a high quality standard for the information you'll find here.



How to ask your Questions

When asking a new question please observe the following guidelines:
  • Look for similar questions already posted by other users before posting your own.
  • Do your research about the topic you're asking. This is a professionals community, don't expect others to do your job for you.
  • Be specific. Open questions are discouraged since they promote discussions without clear conclusions.
  • One question at a time. If multiple questions post them separatedly. Keep in mind that your questions should help other users in the future as well.
  • Explain yourself correctly. Poorly written questions get fewer answers and get downvoted. You can add pictures and links to improve your question.
  • Be polite and stick to the technical aspects. Avoid subjects like politics, religion, sex, etc. You can be funny when writing, but don't post jokes.


How to Answer

Answering has similar guidelines as asking:
  • Don't duplicate other answers unless you're providing a new insight, a different point of view, or you're adding something significant.
  • Do your research. ALWAYS do your research before posting.
  • Be specific and to the point. Avoid posting "opinion-only" kind of answers, they promote arguments and this should be avoided.
  • Don't post a new question as an answer. Post your own questions independently; you can link other questions inside your own as reference.
  • Use the question's comments to ask for clarification and further information.
  • Be clear. Poorly written answers get fewer votes. You can add pictures and links to improve your answer.
  • Be polite and stick to the technical aspects. Avoid subjects like politics, religion, sex, etc. You can be funny when writing, but don't post jokes.


Earning Expertise

All users have an Expertise Rating. It represents how appreciated a user's contribution is in the community. Every time one of your questions or answers gets voted -up or down- it's reflected in your expertise rating.

You can earn Expertise in several ways:

  • Posting a question: +1, as long as it has a zero or positive vote count and it has no negative flags.
  • Posting an answer: +2, as long as it has a zero or positive vote count and it has no negative flags. Granted only for one answer per question. Does not apply when you answer your own questions.
  • Your question is voted up: +5. Posting good questions is important for the community.
  • Your answer is voted up: +10. Providing good answers is a great way to earn expertise.
  • Your answer is accepted: +15. Giving the solution to somebody else's problem is the best way to earn expertise.
  • Accept other user's answer for your question: +2. It's important that you let other users know which answer solved your problem.

You will lose Expertise when:
  • Your question is voted down: -2. Bad or poorly researched questions should be avoided. You'll also lose the +1 from posting a question if the vote count is negative.
  • Your answer is voted down: -2. Bad answers only make it harder to find the good ones, this is a "no-no". You'll also lose the +2 from posting answers if the vote count is negative.
  • You vote down another user's answer: -1. We want to avoid overuse of downvotes, but don't hesitate to vote down if you think it's deserved. You don't lose expertise when voting down on questions and comments.
  • One of your posts receives 5 negative flags: −100. If the community thinks that your posts are not appropiate you may also be banned from posting.


DO's and DON'Ts

Here's a list of things that you should do, and others that you should refrain from doing:
  • You must declare your affiliations. You may recommend a product or service from a company that you work for or are affiliated with, but only if it's clearly related to the subject of an answer or question. TO DISCLOSE EXPLICITLY your affiliation with said company so that everybody knows that you're an interested party.
  • Don't SPAM. Questions, answers and comments considered SPAM will be deleted, and the offending member may be banned if recurring.
  • Refer to specific Standards whenever possible. Adding references in your posts for the current Standard you're applying will be of great help for people that read your post in the future.
  • Don't publish copyrighted material unless you're the author or have explicit rights to do so. This includes links and embedded information. You may post quotes only if you correctly cite the actual source. Concrete Questions will not be held liable for the behavior of the community members, each one is responsible for his/her own actions.
  • Don't post news unless it's to provide or update an answer to an old question. Posts like "What do you think about the new..." belong to the News section.
  • Be thorough with the information you post. Both when asking and answering, being specific and precise helps you and the community. If you're asking about a sand, don't call it just "regular sand" or something like that; call it "siliceous river sand 0/4 mm with a Sand Equivalent of 85% and 3% fines passing 0,125 mm sieve" instead. You see the point, right?
  • Don't assume that you're situation is the norm. The community has people from all around the world, and you'll be surprised what "normal" stands for in different countries. In case of doubt, see the previous point in this list and make sure that you give complete information about what you're discussing.
